The Invention of Hugo Cabret

Selznick, B. (2007). The Invention of Hugo Cabret. New York, New York: Scholastic.
There is a secret that several individuals want to figure out and some want to forget. There is a notebook, drawing, a key, a boy and girl, an old man, and most importantly, and automaton. All involved do what they can to uncover this secret. Join the boy, Hugo, and putting the pieces of the puzzle together in solving this secret. Selzink presents black and white cartoons and photographs that cover many pages within the book. The lines within the cartoons are used to texturize the landscape and characters. Black and whites are used to depict the time of day when certain events take place within the story. What photographs that are used are both blurry and clear in depicting actual events of the time of the story as well. This book would be good for older readers in identifying cause and effect, problem and solution, and theme. Older readers can also be given a caption and one illustration or photograph to practice inferencing.  Attached is a well put together video of Hugo Cabret. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYiumrSxAg8
