Schlitz, L. (2007). Good Masters! Sweet Ladies!.
Cambridge, Massachusetts: Candlewick Press. Seventeen short monologues present
the year 1255 in Medieval England. Each monologue is a different point of view
from a child of this time period. Some of the monologues were pleasant to read,
as well as, some more realistic and displayed what life was like for many in
the medieval time. Characters range from high social order of a child of
a lord or knight, to a blacksmith, to a beggar and mud slinger. Schlitz begins
her book with providing a map of the year 1255 Medieval England. As young and
older readers take on a monologue, they can have an idea where each of their
character comes from. The colors amongst the map and throughout the
monologues are earth tones. The lines of the illustrations are fine and detailed
in how each item is sketched, such as lines to show the creases on clothing and
texture amongst the buildings and animals. Schlitz book would be good to
use in a lesson presenting medieval literature to both young and older readers.
Students can take their monologue and learn to annotate it and provided a
deeper understanding of what they are reading. Attached is a video for
you to loo at to hear more details. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6rVF_J6pyw
