The Legend of the Bluebonnet

DePaolo, T. (1983). The legend of the bluebonnet. New York, New York: G. P. Putnam’s Sons. Devastation has hit their land and people. The Comanche Indians pray to their Great Spirits in hopes of rain to bring back life. She-Who-Is Alone lost her family to the famine and only had her warrior doll left. It is her sacrifice of her warrior doll to the Great Spirits that brought the bluebonnets and rain and saved her people. DePaola used earth tones across the pages in passing on the Comanche Indian’s legend of how the bluebonnets came to be throughout the Texas hill country. This picture book would be great to use in a lesson on legends for older children. It could also be used for younger children in regards to theme by teaching consequences for being selfish.
