Bartoletti, S. (2005). Hitler’s youth: growing
up in Hitler’s shadow. New York, New York: Scholastic. Growing up in
Germany during World War II, many of the youth were encouraged to join
Hilterjugend, or Hitler’s Youth. Both boys and girls attended meetings and
trainings to sacrifice themselves for the Nazi party and Hitler. Many of the
boys and girls went against their parents and some event turned their parents
into the Nazi party for not agreeing with Hitler’s ways. This informational
text provides actual photographs from Germany and around Europe of Hitler’s
Youth in their trainings and preparing for battle. Bartolettie does a fabulous
job depicting this gruesome part of our global history. Although graphic photos
are left out, enough is provided to enhance the text in detail. Bartolettie
provides information about those who did stand up to Hitler, his youth, and
party, as well as, provide details about the punishments for those who rebelled
against him and for the youth who eventually stood their trials at the end of
World War II. This informational text is a well prepared piece for older
readers. This can be used in lessons for secondary history classes or
identifying certain types of texts. It could also be used for research to
provided for a informational written piece. A book trailer has been
attached for your viewing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQzIQQcsXcE
