Balloons Over Broadway

Sweet, M. (2011). Balloons over Broadway. New York, New York: Houghton Mifflin Haraourt. Imagine sitting at home watching one of the most famous parades making its way down the street in New York City on Thanksgiving morning. Have you ever wondered how the Macy’s Day Parade came to be? Learn about hos the parade came to be and how Tony Sarg contributed to the parade through his use of puppets. Sweet provides a beautifully laid out picture book of how the Macy’s Parade came to be by providing teh history of Tony Sarg. Step by step Tony designs the parade and eventually puts on the first parade on Thanksgiving Day 1924. After many adjustments through a couple of years, Tony has now provided us with the floating balloons that we see today. This picture book would be great to use with young readers in identifying cause and effect, as well as, problem and solution. A video clip is provided to preview. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONXv_7sXQdA
