Code Name Verity

Wein, E. (2012). Code name Verity. New York: Hyperion.
This historic fiction has two different view points, Maddie, the best friend and pilot and Verity, a secret agent captured by the Gestapo.

“Verity” is her code name, and is in a terrible situation; held by the Gestapo and must decode information given to her by the Nazi’s. She journals her stay in prison, while interrogated about everything she knows about the British arm. Will she give the Nazi’s what they are looking for or will she misguide them thinking they are getting what they want? While Verity is decoding, Maddie is on a mission to find her friend. After crashing her plan, Maddie seeks refuge to get Verity and head home to England.

This book is intended for adolescents 12 years old and up. As a historical fiction, readers are taken into ideal events with believable characters. The characters deal with surviving either prisoners of war or rescuing and retreating to safety.

Teachers can pair this novel with Holocaust and World War II units and supplement class novels with Code name Verity.
